I’m surprised how long it took me to discover hummus bread and hummus toast after I fell in love with the bean-based dip/spread (all the way back in college), but I’m making up for lost time now…

All these recipes combine my need for protein and, hopefully, a fruit or veggie, with a bit of carbs for the perfect snack or part of a meal.

Hummus Bread

The potential of hummus bread toppings knows no end – just your imagination! Below are my go tos, but I feel like I’m always stirring up other options.

What’s the difference between hummus bread and hummus toast? Why, just the toasting of the bread, of course. It’s up you. The topping combinations work either way!

Avocado & Fresh Basil Hummus Toast

I’m a huge fan of avocado toast; I mean what’s not to love? But it seems as though the internet and restaurants are a bit saturated with the whole phenomenon.

I’m not ready to give up my avocado yet, but I love it paired with fresh herbs (basil here, but cilantro for a Mexican flavor would be just as delicious).

The flavor of avocados is easily enhanced with salt and fresh pepper and I always like to sprinkle some chili flakes. Other tasty toppings are cumin, garlic salt, chili powder, etc.

Raisin & Nut Hummus Toast

I always think of hummus as a savory option but wanted to come up with something on the slightly sweeter side. I wasn’t totally sure how this mix would turn out, but it might just be my favorite.

Finely chop about a quarter cup salted pistachios and raw almonds. Drop a few raisins on top and drizzle with honey. This would be a great option for breakfast, a snack, or something to satisfy your sweet tooth! Yes, you CAN eat hummus for breakfast!

Roasted Bell Pepper & Chia Seed Toast

Have you had a chia seed kick yet? I come and go with them. Ground or whole, they’re great additions to a lot of meals though. I’ve been adding them to my morning yogurt parfait and to my snacks (like my homemade Ritz peanut butter crackers).

I added them to roasted bell peppers here for a bit of crunch. You could use poppy, sesame, or flax seeds just as easily!

Cucumber & Everything Seasoning Hummus Toast

If there is one random recipe from blogging that may have been my most brilliant moment, it was making up a batch of everything bagel seasoning.

I don’t eat many bagels, but I LOVE that flavor combination and it adds so much deliciousness to the most basic of snacks.

This cucumber everything hummus toast is full of flavor and it comes together unbelievably fast – great for those moment when you just need to eat!

Making hummus at home is SO easy and only requires a few ingredients.

If you want to take a stab at making your own hummus – try this Basil Hummus, this tasty roasted eggplant hummus, or this Sweet Potato Hummus.

They’re all easy and so good on toast or as a side appetizer.

How to Store Hummus

Whether or not you opt to make your own hummus, help your hummus stay fresh for longer by storing it in your refrigerator in a tightly closed container. You want to keep all moisture out to avoid any spoilage.

If you have extra and want to freeze it, hummus freezes well and will defrost overnight in the refrigerator.

HUMMUS TOAST

Hummus toast is avocado toast’s lesser known cousin. If you love hummus (I certainly do!), then you’ll love it on a piece of tasty toast topped with any one of these topping combinations. The fruit and seed combination sounds weird, I know, but don’t knock it til you try it!

Ingredients

AVOCADO, BASIL, + CHILI FLAKE HUMMUS TOAST

  • 1 slice hearty bread toasted
  • ¼ Cup hummus
  • 4 basilleaves
  • ½ small avocado
  • salt
  • pepper
  • chili flakes

NUT, RAISIN, + HONEY HUMMUS TOAST

  • ¼ Cup hummus
  • ¼ Cup salted pistachios + raw almonds finely chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon raisins
  • 1-2 Tablespoons honey

ROASTED BELL PEPPER + CHIA SEED HUMMUS TOAST

  • 1 slice hearty bread toasted
  • ¼ Cup hummus
  • ½ roasted bell pepper sliced
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds can also use poppy, sesame, or flax seeds

CUCUMBER + EVERYTHING BAGEL SEASONING HUMMUS TOAST

  • 1 slice hearty bread toasted
  • ¼ Cup hummus
  • 4 cucumber sliced halved
  • 2 teaspoons everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  • Spread hummus evenly on toasted bread.

  • Layer ingredients as desired.
